  • Add the standard allowance (about 10%) and move on if: it's a simple rectangle, a straight layout, an experienced hand, and your supplier is close enough for an easy top-up.
  • Bump it to 15–20% if: the layout is diagonal or patterned, it's your first build, the boards are long or breakage-prone, or delivery is remote and a second trip is expensive.
  • Order a touch over and round to full units if: the material ships in fixed sizes (concrete by the load, gravel by the truck, drywall by the sheet) — you pay for the whole unit anyway.

The flip side of waste is what you throw away. For anything past a few bags, a disposal bin is the realistic line item, and construction debris is priced higher than household junk.

Two habits keep this number down: keep clean, heavy, recyclable material (clean concrete, metal, cardboard) out of the mixed bin, and don't over-order in the first place — every surplus sheet you buy is paid for twice, once at the till and once at the tip.

✗ Deal-Breakers — Stop and Rethink, Don't Just Pad

  • The pattern's waste is blowing the budget. If herringbone or a picture-frame border pushes a material 20% over, that's a design decision to make on purpose — not a number to quietly absorb.
  • Long-lead or special-order material. Running short on a custom-milled or special-order item can mean weeks of delay, not a quick top-up. Over-order deliberately and confirm the lead time before you commit.
  • Nowhere to store or dispose of the surplus. Ordering 25% extra you can't keep dry or get rid of cheaply just moves the cost from "short" to "wasted."
  • A quote or takeoff with no waste line at all. "Exactly enough" is a plan to run short. If a number looks suspiciously lean, ask what waste factor it assumes.

  1. Start from a real takeoff — measured quantities for the actual build, not a guess.
  2. Apply the table's percentage for your material and layout; use the high end if it's complex or your first time.
